Clear Aligners vs Braces: An Honest Comparison
Both options straighten teeth well, but they suit different mouths, budgets and lifestyles. An orthodontist explains who does best with each, what they cost and how long treatment takes.
- orthodontics
- clear aligners
- braces
An honest start
The real question is not which is better
People ask whether clear aligners beat braces, and they expect a tidy answer. The honest one is that both work well, and the better choice depends on your teeth, your habits and your budget.
Aligners and braces are two ways of applying the same controlled force. Aligners use removable plastic trays; braces use brackets and a wire. The biology underneath is identical.
What changes is everything around the biology: wear time, how complex the movement is, and how much depends on you. You can read the broader picture at /services/orthodontics.
Side by side
Aligners and braces compared
This is the comparison I walk through with patients in the chair.
| Clear aligners | Braces | |
|---|---|---|
| Appearance | Nearly invisible at conversation distance | Visible, though ceramic brackets are subtler |
| Removability | You take them out to eat and brush | Fixed in place for the whole treatment |
| Wear time | 20 to 22 hours a day | Working 24 hours a day |
| Best for | Mild to moderate crowding and spacing | Complex bites and rotations |
| Typical cost | $3,500 to $7,500 | $3,000 to $7,000 |
| Check-in visits | Every 8 to 12 weeks | Every 4 to 8 weeks |
These ranges are typical, not guarantees. Your quote depends on how much movement you need.
Where aligners shine
When I reach for aligners first
Aligners are a strong choice in more situations than people expect.
-
Adults at work
If you are in meetings or on camera, removable trays straighten teeth without anyone knowing.
-
Good brushers
You remove the trays to eat and clean, so your normal hygiene routine keeps working.
-
Mild to moderate cases
Crowding, spacing and small relapses after old braces move beautifully with aligners.
-
Fewer office visits
We often check aligner patients every eight to twelve weeks, and some visits are quick.
If you choose aligners
The rules that decide your result
Aligners are only as good as your habits.
- Wear the trays 20 to 22 hours a day
- Take them out only to eat and brush
- Clean trays daily with a soft brush
- Change to the next tray on schedule
- Keep the previous tray as a backup
- Tell us early if a tray stops fitting

Straight answers to common questions
These are the questions that come up most in consultations.
Do clear aligners work as well as braces?
For mild to moderate crowding and spacing, yes, when worn as directed. Complex rotations or large space closure are often more predictable with braces, which is why we plan in software first.
Can adults get braces?
Adults make up a large part of our orthodontic patients, and there is no upper age limit for moving healthy teeth. Results are just as stable with good retainer wear.
How long will my treatment take?
Most aligner cases run six to twenty-four months and most brace cases twelve to thirty. The consultation simulation gives you a realistic estimate before you commit.
Will my teeth stay straight afterwards?
Only if you wear your retainers. Teeth drift back over a lifetime, and nightly wear after the first few months protects the result you paid for.
What does treatment cost, and does insurance help?
Aligners generally run $3,500 to $7,500 and braces $3,000 to $7,000. Many plans include a lifetime orthodontic benefit of $1,500 to $2,000, and we offer financing at /insurance-financing.
